Designing for disability
Special Effect
Special effect is a charity that helps children with mental and phisical disabilities to enjoy video games by using all different types of technology.
Physical disability-
The problems that some people may face in gaming if they have a physical disability is being able to mash buttons when needed in the game and they also may find the control mapping to be difficult due to their inability to either reach buttons, because they have some form of deformity, or to use things like trigger buttons on a controller
The way we as deveopers can minimise this is to implement custom key mapping for both console and PC. We can also use in detail options to let the player design a custom difficulty that works for their needs instead of automatically lowering the over all difficulty.
Super Mario Bros-
I have played through the first level of super Mario Bros and the first issue I find is that you cannot custom map the controls. Another issue i have found is that you often have to jump multiple times in a row to get past enemies and to get on higher blocks this could be difficult for someone who cannot move their fingers or hands in that way.
What we can do to fix this is by being able to map out the controls to the comfort of each user. We can also make a alto jump feature for when it comes to things like jumping over pipes.
